What that means per animal: a dairy cow on 20 kg a day uses BDT 170 of silage a day, and one 50 kg bag lasts her about two and a half days, inside the 2-3 day limit for an opened bag. For your own herd, the free silage calculator (in Bangla) gives the bags and the cost for any number of animals and days.
Who supplies corn silage in Bangladesh, and where to buy it
There are three ways a farm in Bangladesh gets corn silage: buy it from a producer, make it on the farm, or make it jointly with neighbours. Many small and medium farms buy, because making good silage needs a maize crop cut at the right stage, a chopper, labour and airtight storage all at once.
Khamarvest Silage (খামারভেস্ট সাইলেজ) is a producer that sells direct. The maize silage is made mainly in Bogura district, around the Sherpur, Dhunat and Shahjahanpur upazilas, with production elsewhere in the country as demand requires. It is sold only through one WhatsApp number, +880 1303-438063. There are no shops, depots, warehouses, branches or dealers in any district, so if anyone shows you a Khamarvest shop or depot, check with that number before paying.
The team is not new, the brand is. Until now we worked behind the scenes, producing large volumes of corn silage for major Bangladeshi companies, and those bags reached farmers under other names. Khamarvest is the same team, the same experience and the same production process, now selling under its own name directly to farmers. With no company or dealer in between, the price stays at BDT 8.50 per kg. Our story (in Bengali).
Whoever you buy from, these are the questions worth asking before you order. Here are Khamarvest's answers:
| Question to ask a supplier | Khamarvest Silage |
|---|---|
| Is the price per kg or per bag? | Both are published: BDT 8.50 per kg, BDT 425 per 50 kg bag. |
| Is transport included? | No. Quoted per order on the confirmation call, with nothing added afterwards. |
| What does a bag actually weigh? | 50 kg. You can weigh a bag on delivery. |
| Is the grain in it? | Yes. The whole plant: leaves, stalk, cob and grain. |
| When do I pay? | On delivery, after checking the bags. No advance. |
| When will it arrive? | The date is given on the confirmation call, because it depends on the district and the quantity. |
| Is there a lab report for protein or TDN? | Not yet published, so Khamarvest does not claim nutrition figures for its own silage. |

What corn silage is, and how it is made
Corn silage is whole maize plants, grain and all, chopped and preserved by natural fermentation in the absence of air. It is the same principle as pickling: lactic acid bacteria turn the plant's sugars into acid, the acid stops spoilage organisms, and the feed keeps for months without drying, refrigeration or preservatives. Made in six steps:
- Harvest at the right maturity. The crop is cut while the grain is between the milk and dough stages, with at least 30% dry matter in the plant. FAO guidance is explicit that ensiling below 30% dry matter leads to poor fermentation and effluent, which carries nutrients out with it.
- Process quickly. Cut plants keep respiring and burn the sugars the bacteria need, so delay between cutting and ensiling costs fermentation quality.
- Chop fine. Short pieces pack together, which drives air out, and they are also easier for cattle to eat and digest. In hot climates fine chopping matters more, because any trapped air feeds moulds and yeasts.
- Compact in layers. The more air pressed out at this stage, the better the result. Loosely filled silage heats within days.
- Seal airtight. A single puncture spoils the silage around it even when the rest of the bag is sound.
- Leave it sealed. Fermentation takes from several days to several weeks, so bags are normally left at least three weeks before opening.
What happens inside a sealed bag
This is worth understanding, because every handling rule below follows from it. FAO describes ensiling in four phases:
- Aerobic phase (hours). Trapped oxygen is used up by the plant material. pH is still around 6.0 to 6.5, as in fresh forage juice.
- Fermentation phase (days to weeks). Lactic acid bacteria become dominant and ferment sugars to acid. pH falls to roughly 3.8 to 5.0, and spoilage organisms are inhibited.
- Stable phase. While air is kept out, very little happens. This is why an unopened airtight bag keeps 6 to 12 months.
- Feed-out phase. Once air returns, yeasts begin degrading the very acids that preserved the silage. pH rises, the silage heats, and moulds follow.
That last phase is the whole reason an opened bag has to be used within 2 to 3 days. It is chemistry, not a supplier's condition.
How much silage per cow per day
Typical daily amounts, from the middle of published extension guidance:
- Dairy cows: about 20 kg per day (range 15-25 kg).
- Beef fattening cattle: about 15 kg per day (range 10-20 kg).
- Goats and sheep: about 1.5 kg per day (range 1-2 kg).
Silage replaces green fodder in the ration; straw, concentrate and mineral mix are added as advised by a livestock officer or veterinarian. Animals new to silage should be introduced gradually over about 7 days. For amounts by body weight, see the Bangla guide on daily amounts by animal weight.
Introducing silage over 7 days
Rumen microbes adapt to the feed they are given. Switch the ration in a day and the established population loses its substrate before the new one is established, which is when loose dung, reduced appetite and bloat appear. A typical ramp for a dairy cow with a 20 kg per day target:
| Day | Silage per day | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 1 - 2 | 2 - 3 kg | Whether the animal takes it at all |
| 3 - 4 | 5 - 7 kg | Dung consistency |
| 5 - 6 | 10 - 12 kg | Rumination, any sign of bloat |
| 7 | 15 - 20 kg | Milk yield holding, trough emptying |
If anything looks off on a given day, hold at that amount for two more days instead of increasing. Taking ten days rather than seven costs nothing.
Judging quality on delivery day
Three checks need no laboratory:
- Smell. Mildly sour, like pickles. Sharp ammonia, putrid or strong alcoholic smells mean the fermentation went wrong.
- Colour. Olive green through light golden brown. Jet black means it overheated; white, blue-green or grey patches are mould.
- Feel. Damp in the hand but not dripping, and the pieces fall apart when released. Slimy or sticky material was ensiled too wet.
Spoiled silage is not simply lower quality feed. Listeriosis has long been associated with silage feeding, because the reduced acidity of spoiled silage lets Listeria monocytogenes multiply, and outbreaks are reported after poor quality silage is fed. The uterus is susceptible at any stage of pregnancy, so doubtful silage should never be given to pregnant animals, young calves or sick stock. The Bangla guide on recognising spoiled silage goes through seven signs.
Storage and shelf life
- Unopened airtight bags keep 6 to 12 months; use within 2 to 3 days after opening, and within 2 days in hot weather.
- Store in shade, off bare ground on a pallet or raised platform, and out of anywhere that floods during the monsoon.
- Stack no more than three or four bags high, or the seams of the bottom bags can give way.
- Rodents are the most common cause of punctures. Tape any hole immediately and feed that bag first.
- Take out only what is needed per feed and close the bag again straight away.
